Weekly Roundup

Hi, everyone!

Today we are back with a quick round up of some great tutorials out there.

1. 25 Ways to Up your Ponytail

This article has styles for every ponytail lover. From quick and messy, to braided and preppy, there is something here for everyone.

2. Ponytails for Curly Hair

We wouldn’t leave our curly gals without rounding up styles that would work with their natural texture as well. A quick help to tame flyaways is to spray some hairspray on your hands (we are particularly fond of the Eufora Elevate Finishing Spray) and going over the top of your head. This prevents excessive product from being used, while calming down frizz and securing the style.

3. 18 Stunning Wedding Makeup Looks

This is a very complete style guide, for brides with all sorts of makeup styles. From natural and airy to smoky and bold, brides can refer back to these ideas for their look. Remember, just because you are a natural makeup wearer on a daily basis, doesn’t mean you can’t take this opportunity to go to town with your makeup. It’s about what will make you feel more beautiful on your special day.

Are you going to try any of these tutorials? If you do, please let us know by tagging us on facebook or tweeting us @brushstrokesva

Herndon Festival 2014

Hi, everyone!

This week is the Herndon Festival! It started yesterday, and it goes through Sunday. If you are planning on coming to the salon, just remember tomorrow (Saturday 5/31) Pine Street will be closed, so prepare to have someone drop you off, or walk, or find a parking space in one of the open parking areas (besides the parking shop across Monroe. Towing is enforced if you park there but don’t go to their stores).

On a brighter side this year Brush Strokes is actually participating in the event! So find us at Pine Street with Station in a booth! We will be doing hair chalk for kids, some fun braiding, and providing SPF coverage by Jane Iredale to all of those interested.

We will be there from 9-6, so if you are in the area stop by and say hello! We have little appreciation gifts as well! It’s the perfect time to have a friend stop by and meet our stylists.

Also, we found this super cute hairstyle on Pinterest, created by MissySue. We thought it’d be perfect for this season, as well for the Herndon Festival. You can use this time to add some fun colors or pattern with a headband. This can totally be done in shorter hair as well! Click on the image to go to the full tutorial!

Bridal Season and Tips

Hi everyone,

what a gorgeous day it is, outside! We are really busy in the salon with all the spring looks, but we are loving all the sunshine!

This time of the year is when the calls starting coming in. Bridal season is one of the most joyful times of the year for a stylist. You get to be part of someone’s story on their most special day. We absolutely love it, and we make sure to treat our brides with care, letting them know they can count 110% on us to deliver their perfect look.

Since we are getting so many calls,we felt it’d be appropriate to give out a few tips about your look of the day.

1. Be you – and be comfortable!

So many people think the bride has to have the tallest bouffant with the whole can of hairspray to be able to stand out on that day. It’s a myth! Lately, we’ve been seeing brides who are sticking true to their style, going for an easy up-do, or even half-do, with no fuss.

And trust us, there is absolutely NO way a bride won’t stand out on her wedding day. The hair is there to compliment you, not to be the look. It has to work with your gown, with your head piece (if you’re wearing any) and with your own style.

Also pay attention to the placement of your hair-do. If there are any bobby pins digging at your scalp that make you uncomfortable, let the stylist know as soon as she/he places it. It’s easier to change something you just did then wait until the end.

2. Pick your accessories in advance!

When browsing for your look in one of the million bridal magaiznes/sites be mindful of any head pieces you will want. You may fall in love with a style that won’t necessarily work with a veil, but there is always something the stylist can change to accommodate that.

We have a few accessories in the salon that we sometimes add to one of our trials. It just shows the bride a different twist on her look that she may not have though of. Sometimes it’s that littlest rhinestone flower that transforms your up-do.

Let the salon know if you’re planning on having any accessories/veil and bring them with you on your trial if you do have them already.

3. Enjoy the process!

Find a salon that will give you the peace of mind you need. The bride usually has so many things on her mind, the last thing she needs is to worry about whether she is happy with her look, or if the stylists will show up on the day of.

We can’t talk about other salons, but we try to make sure the bride will feel welcome, peaceful and most of all happy on her wedding day. We call, we email, we leave messages, we do all we can to ease the bride’s mind and let her know we are on board with the planning.

4. Invest on a hair/makeup trial!

We also truly encourage the bride to come in for a hair trial. And the trial shouldn’t be done over a month away from the wedding. We find that brides tend to doubt themselves and the style they chose if there’s a long gap between the trial and her wedding day.

A trial will insure you that the style you looked at works for you and on your hair, and will make you THAT much more excited for the day of! As I mentioned if you do have accessories on you we can make sure on the placement of them, we can know how to work around having a veil for the ceremony but not for the reception, and all other details that need to be looked at.

Most of our brides just come in for their hair trial, but we also can have a makeup trial. If you are even a little unsure of how it’s going to look like, book one. We’ve found it’s better to cross that worry off your list.

5. Think of wants/needs.

Most salons offer to travel to your venue if you need them to. And they all charge differently if they have to leave the salon. Ask for all the price differences, ask for schedules, and try to know in advance what will work best for you.

If you’re having a weekend wedding at your venue, chances are you’re looking to hire stylists that can come to you. Depending on your wedding day, prices can also vary.

We all know weddings are expensive, but brides and families have to be mindful of the stylists time as well. When leaving the salon, stylists not only give up having clients for a long time (getting to the venue, styling the bride/party, driving back) but they also have to make sure they take all tools with them. That’s why you can expect to be charged more if you need a stylist to come.

If you think you want a trial, ask about them. Many salons already have in the up-do quote the fee for the trial. Others charge a percentage of the final quote to do a trial (it can vary anywhere from 30% -50%).

And finally, find a stylist you really like. Having an open line of communication will guarantee that your expectations on how you want your hair to look like will be met, and also that your stylist will be honest about whether the look will work for your type of hair and your length as well.

Well, there you have it! These are our top tips for brides. Feel free to comment, or call us at the salon to know about our bride specials and quotes!

Paul Mitchell Event

Some of you know by now that we had the opportunity to meet with Paul Mitchell’s Future Stylists this past Tuesday night, on their Future Professionals in Action 2014 event.

It was our first time going to this event, so we didn’t really know what to expect.

This is how it went:

We were first directed upstairs, where Cleashay, placement leader for the design team, explained to all salon owners and managers what their graduates would be showing us that night, as well as the programs offered at Paul Mitchell at Tysons.

Off we went to the first floor, where a lot of young graduating stylists were showing their talent on customers.

We had the opportunity to walk around, check out their portfolio, ask questions, and most importantly interact with all of them.

We were joined by the lovely Mina, manager of Spa Noa.

The event took about 1.5 hours, in which we walked around and checked out the stylists and their work. We were super impressed with the quality of the work. There were at least 10-15 salon owners/managers and recruiters on the floor, but most of them didn’t seem fazed by it – instead being lovely, professional and approachable.

If you are or know any salon owners looking for great beginner stylists to guide and see flourish, we definitely recommend checking it out.

Check back tomorrow for some great news on a new smoothing system that just came out! And for more pictures of the event, check out their facebook page here!

Beauty Brunch Sunday!

We don’t know how it escaped us to post about our brunch sooner, but with Best of NoVa, giveaways and an amazing new Smoothing System,  we got our hands full.

We can’t thank you all enough for coming in and sharing on that day with us. Also, we are truly thankful for Misty Carter from the Lansdowne Asthetic Center for coming in and explaining further about her work, and their new clinic opening this winter. We look forward to having you here again, as well as Dr. Baraki. Thanks, again, for all the help into making this brunch a success and educating our clients.

Thomas Yvanauskas, from Innovative Skincare did some amazing product demos as well. Thanks for putting together some outstanding goodie bags for our lovely ladies. We love these products, and would like nothing more than to see our clients using, trusting, and loving them as well.

Well, anyhow, here are bits and pieces of an amazing afternoon with a great, fun, amazing group of gals.

Brunch done right: lots of cheesy goodness, as well as some amazing quiche by our lovely Mary.

And decadent chocolate banana bread by one of our lovely clients, Debbie.

After our initial talk, the ladies gathered in the room for some makeup application demos and talk through. Stephanie did an amazing job, and all our ladies looked fantastic! We also got to open our newest Makeup Display by Jane Iredale and we couldn’t be happier!

After a wonderful group talk about Dr. Baraki, herself, and the new Lansdowne Aesthetic Center, Misty went on to give personal 1 on 1 consultations to our clients.

Thomas spent a lot of time explaining the benefits of a good skincare regimen. After educating the clientele about the iS products, he demonstrated how to properly use them for maximum results. Thomas tailored an ideal regimen for each of our clients, based on their problem areas, or how to prevent them.

Michelle focused on giving tips on achieving that salon blowout at home. Our clients learned how to recreate the look themselves.

It was a lovely Sunday afternoon, filled with giveaways and prizes, great talks and bonding of clients, reps, and our stylists. We received an amazing feedback from the ladies that attended it, and we will soon set up another brunch!
