Tabatha’s Tips

Some of us in the salon simply love to watch before/after shows. Be it home, office, bars, we love to see how a space and its team can be vastly improved and utilized.

Add that to the fact that Tabatha Coffey, a talented hair stylist, has her own show ” Tabatha’s Salon Takeover” and you’ve got a hit with us.

We know sometimes when it’s your stylist or friend telling you things we don’t always listen to them. But take it from her – who won competitions, owns salons, and does a before/after show where she revamps salons, changing the business model, educating stylists and team work.

On PopSugar, Tabatha shared tips on how to communicate better with your stylist to ensure you will leave the salon super happy with the service you got. Just click here!

The Gray Comeback

I don’t know about you, but we’ve seen a huge peak in clients embracing their gray strands.

We can attribute it, in part, by power women, such as Meryl Streep, who rocked her gray roots on the movie Devil Wears Prada. That’s the one that stands out the most to us.

But recently, we’ve seen it popping in every fashion spread, popping on every pinterest board, and, like we said, we see even our clients wanting to partake into it.

Why do you think this is?

Well, most people think it’s super easy to maintain. And granted, if you’re embracing your natural roots, it does get easier (once all that dyed hair grows out). The process, however, is a bit more complicated.

To make the transition as smooth as possible, Mary shares a couple of options on how to embrace your grays:

– Some clients decide to let it grow about 2-3 inches before coming in. When they do walk in, they want to just chop it all off and rock a pixie (such as the one Jamie Lee Curtis has on the bottom of the page). That ensures that the hair stays all gray, with no worries about roots.

– Other clients can’t stand the thought of walking around with roots. For them, we recommend a Semi-permanent color. It will cover the gray, but it will all wash away gradually. For women with governmental jobs, or ones that require their hair to always be done, that is the best option.

– The last option is to embrace the transition. That seems to be the one most of our clients turn to. They come in, and get a shorter cut. Still not short enough to get rid of all the color, but they start slow, and wait for the gray to come we call it the gray ombre.

A lot of young adults are actually trying to achieve gray in a salon. If you want to, just bear in mind that gray is a tricky color. A lot of stylists say that it takes a couple of washes for the color to show the exact gray the client wants. It’s not for the low key clients, because it requires a lot of maintenance.

The gray is notorious for the fading. And you have to make sure to use the right products, because anything that deposits any color (such as purple shampoos for blondes) will change the appearance of the gray. (Users of purple shampoos say their strands get more of a lavender hue).

Still on the fence? Here are a couple of pictures we found on pinterest of this “new” style.

Makeup Looks from the Oscars 2015

As promised, we’re back today to dish on all the makeup trends we’ve seen at the Red Carpet on Sunday.

From bold lips, to nude looks, all big name celebrities rocked some amazing trends. Let’s take a look!

– Bold lips

So many starts rocked this trend, but two names definitely stand out: Chrissy Teigen and Margot Robbie. Chrissy looked amazing head to toe, but her bold wine lipstick stood out- it was lined to perfection, and complimented the bronzy skin. Margot rocked a neon orangy/red lipstick and was the eye catcher of the evening. She did forgo anything else, keeping the rest of her makeup clean and neutral so the color wouldn’t compete.

– Rosy Cheeks/Lips

For this look, we also have two stars that need to be talked about: Anna Kendrick and Chloe Grace Moretz. Anna was head to toe peach perfection. Her blush was flawless and matched her lipstick and gown almost to a “T”. It can get matchy-matchy, but we loved how she opted for a smokey eye look to balance out the peach and it worked. She is by far one of our favorites of the night. Chloe kept things pink and age-appropriate. Her foundation didn’t look heavy and it enhanced her beautiful skin and earring.

– Nude Lips

We’d say for everyone that follows the carpet looks, it was a surprise to see Rita Ora following in the trend. Her signature look is a bold red lip, and we were all excited to see her carrying on a nude lip and bold eye look. It looked really sophisticated and classy. Another celebrity to ace the nude lip look was America Ferrera. Her eyes popped and her accessories shined through. The nude lip was a perfect balance to her look.

Oscars 2015 looks

Most of you probably have seen pictures of all the stars strutting their best at the Oscar’s red carpet, but we thought we’d bring you the highlights in terms of hair/makeup.

We love to see how some starts stay true to their style, while others love to push the envelope with their looks.

Here are some of the hair trends from the Oscars:

– Ponytails:

We saw starts like Jennifer Lopez, Dakota Johnson rocking a chic, but simple ponytail. They let their gowns and makeup be the highlight of the night.

– Undone Updos

We can’t comment on this style without mentioning the beautiful and talented Emma Stone. She stood out for us on the carpet. Both her gown and her up-do were sensational. Anna Kendrick looked stunning, as well as new mom Zoe Saldana.

– Slicked Do’s

This hairstyle is definitely not for everybody. There are always mixed reviews on whether this is a flattering look, or not. But we saw some power names rocking it, such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlet Johansson.

– Blow-outs

We love women that can rock out just a simple, but elegant blowout. And some of them definitely did: Viola Davis, Jennifer Aniston, Keira Knightly, Nicole Kidman, to name a few. The reviews on their looks was amazing too. It just goes to show that sometimes less is more. And we can say that none of this ladies looked under-dressed compared the other attendees.

Check out all the amazing hairstyles here and let us know which one is your favorite! Next we will touch on some of the best makeup moments at the Oscars.

Skin strategies for every age

On the March 2015 edition of Real Simple magazine, they go over the best anti-aging strategies for your skin at every age.

We liked the article so much we thought of sharing it with you! So of course, all credits go to their amazing team as well as the original writer Genevieve Monsma.

According to the article, less is sometimes more with your skin. Having an extensive and complicated routine is the #1 reason why people don’t follow through with it. Keep it simple, but invest in good products – that’s the secret of a great skin care regimen.

They also give you breakdown of what treatments/products you should reach to depending on your age. So we will give you an abbreviated version.

20s

– Your skin has mostly calmed down from all teenage hormone unbalanced, so most won’t have too many problems;

– Your skin still produces plenty of collagen, and any sun damage is still well concealed under your skin’s surface;

– Keep your routine basic, start using anti-aging products as a prevention, and avoid anything that causes damage to the skin: smoking, not washing your face and taking off your makeup, sun.

– Treatments recommended are seasonal facials.

30s

– Focus on preventing fine lines and discoloration due to sun damage;

– Invest in deep cleaning products that can balance your oil production;

– Treatments recommended are chemical peels and botox depending on how accentuated your fine lines are.

40s

– Sun damage will start breaking through the surface of your skin, in the form of brown spots;

– Your sebum production usually declines, so keep your cleanser for only nighttime;

– Anti-aging prevention is still key;

– Treatments recommended are botox/dysport for any existing lines, as well as fillers when needed.

50s

– This is when the collagen production slows down, and skin can start looking saggy;

– The majority of women will start experience menopause or peri-menopause, which has an impact on the skin;

– Load up on products that will boost hydration and collagen production;

– Treatments recommended are laser resurfacing treatments and fraxel laser.

60s

– Your skin care routine shouldn’t change too much;

– Some women notice more sensitivity on their skin;

– Hydrate, Firm and Treat your discoloration are your top concerns;

We no longer provide Spa Services here at Brush Strokes, but we highly recommend our business partners Spa Noa, here in Reston. They would love to take care of you and any skin care concerns you may have.

Valentine’s Day Makeup Looks

Valentine’s Day is just a few days away! Do you have plans?

We are having Jane Iredale master makeup artist Georgia Mechlin here with us at the salon for makeup applications as well as great discounts! So check us out for that.

We also wanted to share a few makeup looks to try this Valentine’s Day! Some of which you should be able to accomplish at home as well.

Some girls are afraid of pink eye shadows. And we agree that you should be careful. Some of them may give the impression of irritation or allergies. So if you want to stay away from coating all your leyelid, a smokey look with a dash of pink would be the perfect option to go with.

If a black, bold look isn’t for you, don’t fret! You can achieve the same smokey look with natural hues. It makes it not only easy to apply, but go perfectly with a daytime plan.

Some women prefer to take on a simpler approach, and still emphasize their eyes. To achieve that, we suggest an eye opening makeup look. Not only is it a simple enough look that you can recreate, but your valentine won’t be able to look away from you. For an additional flair, add some half lashes at the end to achieve the fuller look on the lashes.

Linda Halbergs approach to the look is less intimidating to our valentines. She keeps the eye makeup on earthy tones, and her lips remain mainly natural, with a sheen of pink. Lots of women think this is more smooch-friendly than red lips.

Most clients that we have want to rock some beautiful bold red lips. It’s Valentine’s after all. I know most guys usually shy away from such bold colors because they don’t want it to get on them or their clothes, but there are tricks to ensure that. First and foremost, opt for a STAIN instead of lip color. Once dry, they don’t budge! Jane Iredale has their Lip Fixations that truly do stay put – plus, they are made with all natural ingredients. Second trick is to apply your lip color, blot with a tissue and even adding some light dusting of powder over the tissue to lock it in. We still prefer the stain method, and all you need to do is moisturize it.

This last look is for the fearless ladies. The ones that take Valentine’s as an opportunity to go all out. This beautiful deep red scream passion and the gold eyes are a nice complement to the bold lips.

Whatever you preference, make sure to create a look that will spark confidence – there’s nothing more beautiful than that.

And if you need any help, we still have a couple of spots open. So call us and take advantage of having your makeup done by a professional, using pharmaceutical grade makeup that will keep your skin beautiful too.

The problem with the Instagram Brows

Makeup artist and Youtube Guru Wayne Goss is known for his great makeup tutorials and tips.

This week on a conference he tackled the problem with today’s Instagram brows. You know the ones, where the tip is not filled and the ends are dark and perfectly shaped.

The days of the instagram brows are limited, he says. While this makeup trick photographs beautifully, he mentions that the top makeup artists out there: Laura Mercier, Mary Greenwell, would never put that look on their clients.

Check out his full video for all the reasons why “Your Instagram Eyebrows are Scaring Everyone”.

Working with an Eyeshadow Pencil

Many of our clients have a hard time understanding eye shadow pens. And after years of relying on normal eyeshadows it’s easy to understand. There is no real mystery in using them. They are this magic sticks that apply the eye shadow in cream format, allowing some time for you to blend it, until it sets and doesn’t move.

The gals at Beauty Department put together a nice tutorial as to where the placement of the shadow should be, and techniques on how to get the shadow blended on your lid. Click here and check it out!

Jane Iredale has these beautiful shadow sticks called Mystikols. They are not exactly creamy in texture. They are a mix of powder + cream. They stay on your lids, but you can move them around a bit as well. Let us know whether you’d like to see the same technique on The Beauty Department’s blog post using our Mystikols.

Messy Hair

We were just talking this week in the salon about hair habits. And we discussed how most french women do not apply heat in their hair. They try to wash it mainly at night, so by the morning, it’ll be filled with personality, waves and body.

Well, it turns out that not everybody can just wake up with the “perfect messy hair”, because naturally there are high expectations when it comes to messy hair too.

This tousled look is getting bigger, especially for short to medium hair lengths. It adds body and texture, and it’s perfect for fine hair-ed gals.

Cara, from the blog Maskcara teaches us how to accomplish the perfect messy hair look – one she calls Perfect ” I don’t care” party look. Click on the image bellow and learn how to accomplish it for yourself!
